It is often said that life is a journey. A piece of music, too, is a journey, one that holds up a mirror to life. The ECSO’s March 30 program explores this theme in works by Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and the neoclassical Italian composer Salvatore Di Vittorio, whose 2015 Sea Fanfare, based on a theme by Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi, who bridged the Renaissance and the Baroque eras, will open the concert.

The guest artist at the ECSO’s November 18 concert will be Hyung Joon Won, a South Korean-born, Juilliard School-trained violinist, who will perform Antonín Dvorák’s impassioned Violin Concerto in A Minor, composed in 1879. In 2009, Won, who hopes to form an inter-Korean orchestra with North Korean members, founded the Lindenbaum Festival Orchestra, an annual The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra (ECSO) today [Jan. 13] announced the postponement of “Symphonic Fantasy,” the evening performance originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, at New London’s Garde Arts Center, due to the current high rate of COVID-19 transmission. As a result of the current health crisis, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra has transformed its educational program, Music in the Schools, into an online resource for all to access, titled Music in the Homes. In the coming weeks, the ECSO will be posting videos to its YouTube channel at youtube.com/ectsymphony of educational videos provided by ECSO musicians. These videos will walk through the personal background of our musicians, musical concepts demonstrated by performed and recorded excerpts, As a result of the current health crisis, the ECSO must regrettably cancel the remainder of the 2019-20 season, including our rescheduled Spring Strings concert that was to take place on May 23rd (originally March 25th), our April 25th season finale – Feast & Fireworks, and the Young People’s Concerts that were rescheduled to May 19th.

The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT Foundation awarded grants in excess of $94,000 in support of 37 programs that benefit children and families in the region on March 24, 2020.

The 2019-2020 season continues with an exciting program that features a Grammy Award winner and timeless compositions. Edward Elgar’s concert overture In the South opens the program with a boisterous theme re-purposed from another work, that joyfully expresses his experiences with his family in Italy. The soloist for the evening is Grammy-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux. Vieaux performs Joaquín Rodrigo’s well known Concierto de Aranjuez.

Throughout his career, Music Director and Conductor, Toshiyuki Shimada has visited Turkey to conduct many of the country’s leading orchestras. These collaborations have connected Toshi with some of the country’s most gifted artists. The evening opens with the orchestra performing Esintiler (Inspirations) a work by one of Turkey’s most beloved composers Ferit Tüzün. The 2020 portion of the ECSO’s 19-20 season kicks off with a non-traditional pairing: the New London Big Band on the stage for the first time with the ECSO. Continuing the celebration of Music Director & Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada’s 10th anniversary, this concert presents a slate of national and local treasures. In recognition of Black History Month, the ECSO performs Concert Overture No. 2 by composer Florence Price. The ECSO continues its 73rd season with an array of pieces that showcase the wide scope of the orchestral repertoire. Opening the concert in bombastic fashion is an arrangement of the iconic rock band Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, a prog-rock operetta and one of their most popular songs. The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus joins to open the concert with this piece.
Composer Charles Frink, an original member of the ECSO, and good friend of founding Music Director, Victor Norman, grew to become a The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra kicks off the 2019-20 season on Saturday, October 26, at 7:30 PM with “New Season – New World”, at the Garde Arts Center in New London. Each performance will be staged on the new McGraw Gallery Quadrangle, the center of the redesigned north end of the Museum grounds where the audience will take in the show from the lawn.
The series offers guests the opportunity to experience the diverse talent of local artists in a variety of musical genres as well as New London, CT – Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra announced today that Lynn Holland has joined the Board of Directors.
Lynn is a Senior Medicare Compliance Officer at Aetna. Prior to coming to Aetna in 2011, she was employed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), an agency within the US Department of Health & Human Services. Her focus at both Aetna and at CMS is Medicare’s health and prescription drug plan program. The renowned violinist and St. Louis Symphony concertmaster David Halen joins the ECSO to end the first half in a performance of one of Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra announced today that Daniel Brandl has joined the New London-based nonprofit arts organization to serve as its new Executive Coordinator. Daniel comes with a wealth of experience in music, education, and arts administration. Currently, he is the Resident Music Director of the Chestnut Street Playhouse in Norwich, CT as well as secretary of its Board of Directors where Daniel was instrumental in helping create a new arts organization after the Spirit of Broadway Theater
Winter Celebrations Concert: December 14, 2015
The Winter Concert will be held at 7pm on December 14, 2015 at Northeast Academy Elementary School in Groton. The concert will open with the String Ensemble, followed by the Youth Orchestra. Two of the Youth Orchestra musicians will be performing solos as well. Highlights will include music by Tchaikovsky, Handel, and Mozart. A suggested donation of $5.00 will be collected at the door. Emmanuel Chabrier and Manuel de Falla both summon Spanish The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus (ECSC) is currently seeking singers for the remainder of their 2015-2016 season, featuring Elgar’s Coronation March and Handel's coronation anthem Zadok the Priest on the stage at the Garde Arts Center in April 2016.
Auditions will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, in Leamy Hall on the Coast Guard Academy campus.
The ECSC offers singers a unique opportunity to join a musical enterprise of symphonic proportion in Southeastern Connecticut. Individuals selected The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra will open its 69th season on Saturday, October 24, at 8 PM with “A Hero’s Life” at the Garde Arts Center in New London.
ECSO Music Director Toshiyuki Shimada conducts a performance that begins with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3. Clarinetist and guest artist David Shifrin will then join the orchestra to perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in A Major.
Mr. Shifrin is an in-demand chamber musician who has collaborated with The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Youth Orchestra (ECSYO) has appointed Kathleen Anderson as its Music Director. Kathleen (Kate) Anderson comes with a wealth of experience in music performance and education in the state of Connecticut. Currently, Anderson is the Director of Music at Tourtellotte Memorial High School in Thompson, where she conducts three performing ensembles and teaches classes in piano, guitar, music technology, and music theory.
